This scholarship is made possible by a generous donation from The William and Nona Heaslip Foundation. Two scholarships, valued at $15,000 each, will be available to students in their second year of undergraduate studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. To be eligible students must be registered for full-time studies, must have scholarship standing, must be in financial need, and must have demonstrated outstanding involvement in university and/or community affairs. Preference will be given to students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This scholarship is renewable for an additional two years providing full-time registration, scholarship standing, financial need and continued outstanding involvement in university and/or community affairs are demonstrated. The scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships Bursaries and Awards based on a recommendation from the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Candidates prepare and provide a curriculum vitae that outlines the following information:
- Name & Contact Information
- Student number
- Overview of Education and Training (may include certificates, diplomas, etc.)
- Scholastic Achievements (may include scholarships, awards, bursaries)
- Non-Scholastic Achievements (may include athletic awards, leadership, volunteer awards)
- Employment Experience
- On-Campus Volunteer Experience (please feel free to include provincial, national and international involvement)
- Community Volunteer Experience (please feel free to include provincial, national and international involvement)
- Conferences Attended
- Research Interest/Publications
- Other areas as deemed appropriate by the applicant
Additionally, please provide a statement (no more than 500 words) outlining demonstrated financial need and how this scholarship would impact your undergraduate academic life. A candidate should also include statements on efforts to fund their education.

The International Student Scholarship recognizes international Arts students who “demonstrate strong academic achievement, engagement in the Faculty, and the potential to make a scholarly contribution within their chosen field of study”.
- You must have successfully completed at least 27 (percentage-graded) credits in the 2016-2017 academic year, in any year level in the Faculty of Arts at UBC (BA, BFA, BMS, BMUS, BSW, BA/SCPO, BA/MM);
- You must have an average of 75% or higher (with no failed courses) in 2016-2017, on a minimum of 27 credits. Your record has to be complete, with no missing grades or incomplete SD’s.
- You must be registered in at least 24 (percentage-graded) credits, in the 2017-2018W academic year or the minimum credit load you require to graduate if you are in Year 4. The only exception to the 24-credit requirement is if you are in your final winter session and need less than 24 credits to graduate, in which case an award may be pro-rated by the number of credits taken.
- If you were on exchange for one term, or for the full year, you will need to provide your exchange transcript, and you must have completed a minimum of 27 credit with 75% or greater while on exchange.
- If you were on Co-op in 2016-2017 for the full year, your academic record will be assessed on the previous academic year (2015-2016), where you will need to have met 75% on 27 credits
*Please note, courses completed during Summer terms do not count towards your GPA, or credit load for award eligibility.
In terms of “engagement in the Faculty, and the potential to make a scholarly contribution within their chosen field of study”, we really want to know what interests you, what you are doing to explore your interests, what you feel are your accomplishments, and what you are learning from your time as a UBC Arts student. Think about what you have done, what you are learning, and where you think it is leading you.
Engagement could be through a club, a peer group, a service organization, a sports team, an academic competition or another type of activity that you feel would fall under the umbrella of "involvement". It could also be that you have done something entirely on your own to make a difference to your field of study or the wider world. Your contribution could be as a "leader", but that kind of role is not necessary.
Your involvement in Arts could mean, among other things, taking part in a research project as part of a course, volunteering in the community, or connecting with the faculty through a variety of experimental learning opportunities that are available (Co-op, Arts Internship, Global exchanges, tri-mentoring etc.).
In a maximum of 500 words, write a description of your involvement/engagement within the Faculty of Arts, including an explanation of what you have learned (about the world and yourself). If you are involved in more than one activity, you may describe the one that has been the most meaningful to you or you may describe more than one. Do not simply list activities. Use the word limit wisely. This is not an essay contest so perfect grammar and spelling are not going to be marked, but "formal" writing (i.e., sentences, paragraphs) is expected. Include your family name, first name and UBC student number in a header on the top of your submission. All documents should be in PDF format.
We encourage you to have your submission ready to be uploaded at the time you begin your application. You will also have the option to save and continue should you need to.
